Few quarterbacks have ever sported as much thick curly hair as Lynn Dickey maintained throughout his lengthy career with Houston and Green Bay. Being from Minnesota, I have never been a big Packers supporter. My father loved the Packers however. So we frequented Green Bay typically once a year around Labor Day. Sometimes the Packers were in training camp yet. But every trip included a visit to Lambeau Field and/or the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.
Lynn Dickey was an under-appreciated quarterback in his time. Green Bay was known in the late 1970s and 80s for fielding mediocre teams typically. The Packers sported an 8-8 record in 4 different seasons in the 80s with Dickey as field general. Their record was more the product of a really awful defense. The offense could put up points with the very best teams in that time period including San Diego, Washington and Miami. Dickey's cannon of an arm provided a huge spark in that regard.
I believe had Lynn Dickey been placed in a situation where he was quarterbacking an offense where the overall team including the defense and special teams was at least adequate, he would have been more highly regarded. Unlike a different #12 (Aaron Rodgers), Dickey was prone to throw interceptions (akin to Brett Favre). But that tendency may have been as a result of the NFL and the rules prevailing in that era. Most quarterbacks put up far higher interception totals in the 1970s and 80s than has been seen in the 2000s.
As an avid collector of sports cards, Lynn Dickey is one player who I have enjoyed buying cards, obtaining autographs and adding to my collection of his items. I do it fairly casually but I also do it in a way that hopefully someday I can own one of each card made during his career. Below is a list of Lynn Dickey's cards made between 1971-86. If I am missing any cards on this list, please let me know. Thanks.
